The Festival

The Maltings Theatre and OVO created The Roman Theatre Open Air Festival in 2014, bringing this unique and historic venue back to life, after it stood largely abandoned for many centuries.

As we now enter our seventh year, the festival is recognised as one of the UK’s leading outdoor theatre events. 2021 is our biggest and best festival yet with 14 shows, 8 companies and 69 performances presenting a diverse range of incredible theatre, opera and music over 7 weeks.

About

Picture the scene… It’s summer, it’s festival time, and two battling rival groups will attempt to cover the entirety of Greek mythology in an evening. In the past ‘BYTE’ have performed sell out shows at the Roman Theatre including Aristophanes’ ‘The Birds' and their steam punk twist on ‘Around the world in 80 days”

“The show was fantastic for the whole family. We loved it!” Audience review.

This time the large ensemble performance company, known for their award winning chorus work, bring us famous myths such as Pandora’s Box, Jason and the Argonauts and Hercules. This theatrical extravaganza which also includes live music and movement, will culminate in a musical imagining of the Iliad complete with a full scale battle!

Audiences are always surprised and amazed how ‘Byte’ bring epic tales to life on stage and this show promises to be an unforgettable feast for the eyes, ears and the soul.

“I am still giggling a year on when I think back to watching the show at the Byte amphitheatre” Audience member.

Olympiaganza is wild, silly and a complete blast for audiences of all ages.

BYTE (Best Youth Theatre Experience) is a professionally directed young people’s theatre company based in St Albans. The group’s ethos is to create the highest quality performances whilst ensuring everyone who takes part feels they belong, bonds through their passion and believes in themselves. The young local company have won critical acclaim whilst performing to sell out audiences at The National Theatre, and winning first place awards at festivals. The BYTE is creative, re-inventive, challenging and inspiring and is open to all secondary age students.

We are honoured to be able to return to this fantastic open-air setting and can’t wait to share our work with audiences this summer.
