The Festival

The Maltings Theatre and OVO created The Roman Theatre Open Air Festival in 2014, bringing this unique and historic venue back to life, after it stood largely abandoned for many centuries.

As we now enter our seventh year, the festival is recognised as one of the UK’s leading outdoor theatre events. 2021 is our biggest and best festival yet with 14 shows, 8 companies and 69 performances presenting a diverse range of incredible theatre, opera and music over 7 weeks.

About

St Albans Musical Theatre Company make their long awaited return in Return to the Stage, a two part spectacular showcase bringing the best of Broadway and the West End to Verulam Park.

Performing a show stopping medley of contemporary and classical musical theatre favourites across two evenings, audiences can look forward to performances from some of theatre-land’s best loved shows, including Mamma Mia, Rent, West Side Story and Les Misérables.

As theatre and live performance prepares to make a triumphant comeback, these special shows will also pay homage to St Albans Musical Theatre Company’s rich 70 year history, with an ensemble of musical numbers lifted from their back catalogue of sell out shows.

Producer Elise Betts said ‘Beginners to Stage is that adrenaline fuelling call to stage that performers up and down the country have been waiting to hear since theatres went dark a year ago. We at SAMTC are delighted to bring live theatre back to audiences with two evenings promising to deliver all of the mesmerising, much missed magic of musical theatre in the glorious surroundings of Verulam Park.

The Return to Stage shows will take place across two consecutive nights, featuring two alternating casts of local musical theatre talent, and a specially tailored programme of performances on each evening.
